Art does not reflect the visible, it renders visible (Paul Klee, about 1920) – Discuss in relation to photography.

We possess art lest we perish of the truth (Friedrich Nietzsche, 1888)

This blog is an account of my attendance and participation in a MA course on The History of Art, with Photography, at Birkbeck College, University of London, starting in October 2012 and completing (hopefully) two years later.  At the first real lecture of the course, the speaker described art history as a “subjective discipline”, which I rather liked, not least because I have been thinking about the subject of discipline in other contexts.  Hence the title of this blog.

It’s mainly a diary, probably of no interest to others, even my nearest and dearest; as I go along I will add links to subjects and images which may be of some slight interest to the passing reader.

I had another blog (now discontinued), a scrapbook of things that interested me like art, photography, music, etc.  I have merged a few old posts into this blog, under the category Scrapbook.
